The Pilot Capless is a knock-action fountain pen: one click extends the nib, and another click retracts it behind a shutter. PILOT describes it as the first capless fountain pen it developed and commercialized, on sale since 1963. This page is a feature-and-fit guide based on PILOT’s own catalog and 2026 press release. It is not a hands-on test, and it does not claim how common the pen is in Japanese offices or how any particular nib feels in use.
What PILOT documents
These points come from the current PILOT web catalog entry for the 18K Capless (example item FC-1-DRM-FM) and the 5 March 2026 new-color release. Retail stock, street price and exact color or nib availability can differ from the published list.
- Mechanism. It is a knock-action pen. When the nib is stored, a high-airtightness shutter is intended to reduce ink leakage and drying. That is a design claim, not a measured overnight-start result.
- Size and weight. The catalog example lists a maximum diameter of 13.4 mm, an overall length of 140 mm and a weight of 30 g. Materials listed for that example are a painted brass barrel, stainless head and steel clip. The converter named on that page is CON-40.
- 18K nib range. The 2026 release lists EF, F, FM, M and SU. EF and SU are specified for black mica only. Published body colors for the 18K design are black mica, deep red mica and deep blue mica. The catalog example used here is deep red mica with an FM nib (FC-1-DRM-FM).
- Special-alloy nib range. The same release lists F and M only. Body colors are matte silver, matte copper, matte ash blue, matte deep green, and a limited matte purple.
- Ink system. Both ranges are listed as cartridge and converter compatible.
- Dated list prices. The catalog and the 5 March 2026 release both show a suggested retail price of ¥41,800 tax included (¥38,000 excluding tax) for the 18K Capless, and ¥17,600 tax included (¥16,000 excluding tax) for the special-alloy Capless. The release says the new colors were scheduled for June 2026. An older ¥13,000 figure is not used here because it is not the current official list price on these pages.

Facts versus fit
Documented facts stop at the specification above. Writing feel, click noise in a meeting, how quickly a stored nib starts, and which pen appears on office desks are not in these sources. This guide does not treat them as observed results.
Conditional fit, not a test verdict:
- The click-to-write layout may suit short, interrupted notes if uncapping is the reason a fountain pen stays in a drawer. That is a use-case inference from the mechanism, not evidence that offices prefer it.
- Nib choice is a specification decision. PILOT offers finer grades (EF, F, FM) and broader grades (M, and SU on one 18K color). Japanese small-script needs and English longhand do not map to a single “sensible default” in the official material.
- The shutter is there to limit drying and leakage. Whether that is enough for a particular ink, climate or storage habit is not answered by the catalog.
- A collector who wants cap rituals, flex, or a custom-ground nib is outside the product definition PILOT publishes for this model. The Capless is specified as a knock pen with the nib grades above, including a stub (SU) on black mica 18K only.
What this page does not say
It does not report six months of daily use, a personal nib-feel test, sales rank, or how often Japanese offices use fountain pens. Those claims were removed because no source or test protocol supported them. PILOT does say the design has received a strong reception in Japan and abroad; that is the maker’s own statement, not a measured share of office desks.
