Itoya’s Ginza flagship is the most famous stationery store in Japan — twelve floors dedicated to paper, pens, and the craft of writing. Foreign visitors often find it overwhelming and leave with the wrong things. This is the floor-by-floor plan I use, refined over years of regular visits.
Ground floor: the writing instruments
This is where most people get lost, and it is worth it — but have a plan. The fountain pens deserve time, the ballpoints deserve a quick look, and the novelty stationery deserves a polite skip. Try before you buy; the staff are genuinely expert and speak enough English to help.
The paper floors
Itoya’s paper selection is the real reason the store matters. Bring a list of what you want to feel — fountain pen paper, smooth gel-pen paper, Japanese washi. The staff will bring you samples to try before you buy, which is the single best reason to shop here instead of online.
The planners
The planner section runs the full range from Hobonichi to Jibun Techo to Traveler’s Factory inserts. This is where the store earns its reputation: the layout is better than any online listing at explaining what each system is actually for. Allow time here even if you are not buying a planner.
What to skip
- The gift floors are beautiful and expensive, aimed at the corporate-gift market. The markup is real.
- The novelty stationery (character-themed items) is better bought at LOFT, which has more variety.
- Anything you can buy cheaper at the airport — Itoya’s tax-free is fine, but the airport duty-free is better for standard pens.
The practical plan
Give yourself a full hour. Start at the writing instruments, move to paper with a specific list, then hit the planners. Ask at the paper floor for help — it is the difference between buying paper you love and paper you tolerate. And check the top floors’ gallery space before you leave; the exhibitions are often worth the trip alone.
