LOFT is Tokyo’s best stationery experience: huge, brightly lit, and stocked with an overwhelming variety of pens, paper, notebooks, and character goods. Foreign visitors routinely walk out with bags of items that were fun to look at and useless at home. The store is not a trap by design — it just rewards people who arrive with a plan. This is mine.
Why people overspend
LOFT’s stationery floor is designed for browsing. Every surface is merchandised to catch your eye, and the result is that most visitors buy what looked nice rather than what they needed. The store is genuinely good; the failure is entirely in the shopping strategy.
What is actually worth buying
- Japanese pens — LOFT has an excellent selection of everyday pens that are dramatically better than their foreign equivalents at the same price. This is the honest reason to visit.
- Masks and stickers — the Japanese washi tape and sticker sections are superb, and stationery crafters will find things unavailable at home.
- The character collaborations — if you are into anime stationery, this is the widest selection outside of specialty stores. The markup is fine for what you are getting.
What to skip
- Notebooks — LOFT’s notebooks are lovely but rarely worth the luggage space. Buy paper at a specialty store instead.
- Planners — the big names (Hobonichi, Jibun Techo) are all here, but the selection is not better than online and the floor layout is crowded.
- Anything in a fancy box — gift packaging inflates the price without adding value for your own use.
The local’s plan
- Set a budget before you go. LOFT will not respect your wallet if you do not.
- Hit the pens first. This is the floor’s real value.
- One pass through the stickers and washi tape, then leave.
- Skip everything else. The store is huge and the rest is largely variation on what you have already decided not to buy.
The verdict
LOFT is a great store with a dangerous layout. Go for the pens and the washi, set a budget, and resist the siren call of the merchandising. Shop it like a local and you will leave with a small, excellent haul instead of a bag of regret.
